Coalbed Methane and Salmon: Assessing the Risks
GW Solutions was commissioned by the Pembina Institute to study the potential impact of Coalbed methane (CBM) development, which has been proposed for Northwest British Columbia's Headwaters region, where three of the province's most important wild salmon rivers—the Skeena, Nass and Stikine—begin. If development proceeds, it would be the first time commercial coalbed methane production has been attempted in salmon-bearing watersheds.
This report evaluates the potential impacts of CBM extraction on salmon and salmon habitat, and explains the need for further research before development proceeds.
